FREE ENTERTAINMENT
Sunday 14th March 2010 - in conjunction with the Canberra Festival
Finishing off the FlipArt event, NewActon presents an all-day mini music festival, Music Art Food.
Enjoy delicious meals, snacks and drinks with free entertainment all day at NewActon’s monthly mini-music festival, Music Art Food. NewActon’s signature event begins in March with some hot entertainment to tie into the Canberra Festival.
This year’s first edition of Music, Art, Food will have a distinct Latin flavour with Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela and Mexico celebrating the bicentenary of their quest for independence at NewActon, as part of the Canberra Festival. The sound of mariachi, joropo and cumbia music, the exuberant moves of cueca and elegant tango dancing will fill up the spaces of Canberra's newest cultural precinct. The artists visiting Canberra for this very special occasion include Los Amigos del Tango, Valdes, Avilas & Vivas Trio, Olga Vega & Navegaos, Villanueva, Duo Deconet, and Denis & Panimales.
Line Up
Los Amigos del Tango
UrbanFood Store + Café @ 10am
Los Amigos del Tango are great friends not only of the tango, but of all varieties of Latin folk music. Juan is an accomplished player of the accordion-like bandoneon, learning as a teenager in Argentina, where he absorbed the street culture and the new wave of modern tango. This classic instrument is supported by the driving, lyrical and romantic rhythms of the acoustic guitar played by Cesar, who hails from Peru. Add tuneful flute or bass played by Brendan, a well travelled Aussie and you will have a unique sound to the delight of anyone who appreciates good music.
Valdes, Avila & Vivas Trio
Urban Food Store + Café @ 11:30am
Valdes, Avila & Vivas are a trio playing traditional Venezuelan and Mexican music, from joropo to jarabe, with their beautiful use of the violin, cuatro and harp taking us on a real journey. Victor Valdes is a maestro of the harp and is always keen to collaborate with musicians of different backgrounds. This time he joins forces with violinist Henry Avila and cuatro player Ivan Vivas to bring us musical gems hardly ever heard in Australia.
Olga Vega and Navegaos
NewActon Courtyard @ 12:30pm
Chilean singer Olga Vega is recently new to the Australian music scene and has received a fabulous response from audiences and critics alike. Accompanied by Navegaos, she presents Latin-American folk music, blending pre-Columbian sounds and contemporary rhythms in a culturally rich and intense performance.
Villanueva
NewActon Courtyard @ 1:30pm
Villanueva is a village in the Goajira region in Colombia, where many of the greatest vallenatos stars were born; these six Colombian musicians have chosen Villanueva as the name of their band that pays homage to the genre. Meeting in Australia, four of the band members come from the capital, Bogota, while the “guachaquero” hails from Bucaramanga, a city famous for the beauty of its women. The final member is from Barrancabermeja. Playing vallenatos in an unorthodox manner, they add electric guitars, drums and bass to the classic guacharaca and accordion to share the folk roots of coastal Colombian music with a wider audience.
Duo Deconet
Diamant Hotel Foyer @ 3:30pm
This impressive pair of musicians began their journey in 2008 performing Latin-American Chamber Music, premiering Mexican and Latin-American works. Violinist Henry Avila began his musical studies in Venezuela and attended courses at the Julliard School of Music in New York. After completing a Master of Violin and Arts in the former USSR he has performed in Colombia, Spain, Japan, Mongolia, Russia and throughout Venezuela. Pianist Irma Enriquez completed her Bachelor Degree in piano with honours in Mexico and her Masters degree in Spain, performing in numerous recitals throughout Mexico, USA, Canada, Spain, Italy and Australia.
Denis Gonzalez and Panimales
Parlour Wine Room @ 6pm
Denis Gonzalez hails from Trinidad to share the infectious rhythms of calypso, soca and reggae. His band Panimales is a five-piece Caribbean group with Andrew Gatus on drums, Rory Brown on bass, Heather Gatus on steelpan and flute, and the charismatic Denis Gonzalez contributing his talent on guitar, vocals, steelpan and timbales. Bring your dancing shoes and no excuse - this band will make you sweat. You’ll have a great time!
