![]() Saturday July 6 ACTEW Grand Gala: Bernstein on Broadway
—
The annual ACTEW Grand Gala concerts have become the hottest tickets in town. Each of these events have sold out and this year will be no exception when the Canberra Symphony Orchestra presents Bernstein on Broadway. Where better than the USA to travel for a Centenary Gala event which is a “must see” concert in the 2013 calendar! A celebrated and sometimes controversial figure, Leonard Bernstein was one of the 20th century’s greatest American composer/conductor. The ACTEW Grand Gala will feature all of his biggest hits, including the overture from Candide and favourites from On the Town. Conducted by Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, Nicholas Milton, Bernstein on Broadway features the sublime voice of one of Australia’s most versatile and brilliant sopranos, former Canberran Lorina Gore, in some wonderful selections including Tonight, I Feel Pretty, and Somewhere from “West Side Story”. ![]() Wednesday August 21 From the New World
—
When Dvorak’s soulful “From the New World” Symphony premiered in New York it was proclaimed to be “the greatest symphonic work ever composed in this country”. Under the baton of our inspirational Chief Conductor & Artistic Director, Nicholas Milton, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s interpretation of this work is an intense and moving experience. Before intermission, the CSO’s own Virginia Taylor, an undisputed Australian musical legend, performs the premiere of Matthew Hindson’s Flute Concerto, House Music. Australia’s classical music rebel/bad boy, Hindson composes music of electrifying energy and spirit. He writes in response to contemporary society and culture, translating techno computer music to performances by living musicians on acoustic instruments. This will be an unforgettable concert event. —
Afternoon favourite, the Canberra Weekly Matinee Magic concert presents a special Centenary collaboration between the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and the Band of the Royal Military College, Duntroon, in 2013. The Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s Chief Conductor, Nicholas Milton, marshals this magnificent musical battalion in repertoire that has been especially selected to reflect the place of pride held by the RMC Band as the musical cornerstone at events of national and international significance. Our grand finale, of course, is the 1812 Overture, delivered with full military strength! The Canberra Weekly Matinee Magic event is a wonderfully moving collaboration between two of the capital’s most distinguished musical traditions. Saturday 21 September 2013 |
